New PC games in 2023: this year's upcoming releases

Sure, it’s terrifying that 2023 is halfway through, but new PC games are as good a consolation as anything. June’s immediately popping off with two massive launches, Street Fighter 6 and Diablo 4 releasing in the first week alone. Don’t forget the future, though: It’s the-season-formerly-known-as-E3, after all. Be sure to check out our summer 2023 showcase schedule so you can keep current on the games coming our way.

Of course, we’re in the age of game delays, and we’ve only seen more during the pandemic years. It’ll be no surprise if a lot of these games get their release dates knocked back for some extra polish. If they’re lucky, it’ll just be one delay. Not all of them are lucky.

Still, even if some of these dates are tentative, 2023 is shaping up to be a huge year—particularly for RPGs. A lot of major releases and long-in-the-works sequels are targeting this year: Starfield‘s delay has us waiting for launch until September, Baldur’s Gate 3‘s early access is planned to end with a full release in August, and of course Diablo 4 is scheduled to turn up too.

Biggest new PC games this month

June’s celebrating the year’s halfway point with a front-loaded lineup of massive releases, thanks to some returning royalty. Each a hallmark of their respective genres, Street Fighter 6 and Diablo 4 kick the month’s door in with back-to-back launches. But whatever your tastes, June’s got something for you: Looking for a dating sim with a Fallen London twist? Try out Mask of the Rose. Need to start your summer with a farm sim? Play the series that inspired Stardew when Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life hits Steam.

Street Fighter 6 | June 2
It’s a new age for Street Fighter: new approachable control styles, new custom fighter singleplayer experiences, new dive gauge mechanics. And most importantly, for Ryu, a new beard.

Diablo 4 | June 6
All aboard the Hell train, folks: we’ve got loot to hoard. Return to the legendary ARPG series and mulch mounds of demons across an open world as one of five classic classes. Maybe as a bear, if you’re a druid.

Mask of the Rose | June 8
Descend once more into the chthonic metropolis of Fallen London—and maybe find romance? In Failbetter’s dating sim/murder mystery/census-taking simulator, meet a gothic undercity’s worth of colorful characters: some cloaked, some tentacled. Some, assuredly both.

Biggest January 2023 games

Persona 3 Portable | January 19
Another treasured Persona RPG arrives at last on PC. Gather your fellow teens, grab your Evoker (which is not at all a gun), and face the terror of the Dark Hour.

Forspoken | January 24
A Square Enix open-world RPG from a new studio of Final Fantasy veterans. As Frey Holland, displaced New Yorker and fledgling sorcerer, adventure across a fantasy world with the greatest magic of all: parkour.

Dead Space | January 27
The Motive remake of the much-loved space horror shooter from 2008. A faithful recreation: severing alien limbs with a plasma cutter remains gruesomely enjoyable and the physics puzzles and no-HUD approach of the original both remain.

Destiny 2: Lightfall | February 28
Destiny tries cyberpunk on for size in its latest expansion. Master new Darkness abilities with Strand powers while exploring a futuristic city on Neptune’s moons. But based on the name, keep your fingers crossed for our favorite big orb.

The Last of Us Part 1 | March 28
The remake of a landmark Sad Dad Simulator finally arrives on PC. With the power of prestige storytelling, survive a country’s worth of third-person shooting in your trek across an America ravaged by fungal zombie apocalypse. You’ll have to supply your own Pedro Pascal, though.

Mojang and Blackbird Interactive have teamed up to create an action RTS game based on Minecraft lore. Go solo, co-op, or even PvP while directing armies of creepers, skeletons, and other new creatures.

Dead Island 2 | April 21
The long-in-the-works sequel to 2011’s resort apocalypse is finally launching this spring. Deep Silver is bringing back zombie-slaying FPS action and apparently a bit more grim humor up its sleeve than the original.

Honkai: Star Rail | April 27
Genshin Impact’s developers are headed to space with another gacha game, this time a turn-based sci-fi adventure. As with Genshin, expect elemental magic and lots of characters to optimize your party with.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor | April 28
It’s dark days for lone Jedi Cal Kestis. Hunted by the Empire across known space, Cal’s got a bigger bag of tricks to help him Jedi: Survive—new fighting styles, new friends, and a newfound talent for taming lizards all feature in this Star Wars sequel.
