After your first or second visit, you’ll find your favorite spots on the island. Your favorite place, your favorite Happy Hour place, or your favorite spot to watch sunsets is where you will find it. We have our own. Truman annex in Key West is a favorite. It has everything.
What are the three greatest things about Truman Annex?
Is what any real estate agent will tell. Location, location, location. Truman Annex offers all of that. This location is just blocks from Duval Street and a few minutes from Mallory Square. It is close to Bahama Village’s famous restaurants and the vibrant nightlife on Duval Street. However, the peaceful location and tree-lined streets offer a tranquil retreat.
Fort Zachary Taylor State Park is just a short bike ride away or a walk away. This beautiful park can be found in the Truman Annex. This beach is a best place to relax and take in the views of the ocean. If the tide is high enough, you might see fish swimming and out of the water.
Truman Annex is located west of Whitehead Street. Southard will lead you directly to Fort Zachary Taylor and the Shipyard Condos when walking down Duval. You will find Truman Annex just a few steps from the Green Parrot. Non-guests can freely walk, cycle, and drive the entire area. I truly encourage it.
Truman Annex Key West has a lot of history. This area is both a neighborhood and a military installation.
Its roots can be traced back to 1845, when it was part of Fort Zachary Taylor. The Navy constructed new docks to make it a home for submarines in 1932. In 1947, it was transformed into the Fort Zachary Taylor Annex. It was then decommissioned in 1974 when the larger nuclear submarines could not use it because they were too big.
As the primary installation in the vicinity, the Naval Air station still operates. The Naval Air station was moved to Boca Chico Key, six miles east of the Truman Annex. Today, 17 acres remain in Truman Annex.
After World War I, the base became inactive, and personnel was released or transferred. Most of the buildings were dismantled or destroyed and moved to different locations. Only occasionally, the base was used for training in seaplanes between 1920 and 1930. It was then inactive until 1939. Before the US entered World War II, the base was reopened to support the Navy.
You will find the Truman White House through the gate just past Margaretville Resort (next to Mallory Square). This area was named for President Truman, who spent many winters in Key West enjoying the weather. You can stop in to view the home and take the tour. This is an interesting story about Truman’s time here and other dignitaries.
Beautiful Places To Stay
There are many options for renting such as condos, townhomes, and stately private homes. You can search the Truman Annex for your vacation rental to see what’s currently available.
Each unit and each area offer a different take on Key West’s lifestyle. These units also include a parking space that makes them twice as attractive. Park the car and drive it in.
They are designed with a Bostonian-style exterior but have all the tropical charm inside. They are a three-story townhouse that has access to a pool. It is interesting to note that Thomas Edison, who worked in the building for six months in 1918, developed 41 weapons for the US war effort.
These condos have one- or two levels. They offer balconies and private courtyards if you live on an upper level.
Harbour Place Condos
This location allows you to see sunsets and passing ships from above. This was once the US Naval Headquarters. It has been repurposed into elegant condos.
Nineteen homes are located in this area, all around a central pool or hot tub.
You will find here a two-level townhouse with private balconies and courtyards.
Single-level condos with balconies or patios on the second level. This is a favorite spot. The large community pool is great for unwinding after a busy day. I prefer the downstairs unit as it offers a private courtyard. Because there aren’t any views from this area, an upper-level balcony doesn’t make sense.
No matter what your reason is for visiting Truman Annex Key West. Plan to walk through the streets and enjoy the beauty of the community and historic stops.
